Grand Forks authorities respond to ammonia leak

(Grand Forks, ND) — Fire crews in Grand Forks responded to Simplot Friday night for a large Ammonia leak.

According to Battalion Chief Chris Carlson, the call came into dispatchers at just after 7:30 p.m. When crews arrived on scene, they were met by Simplot personnel, who confirmed all employees had vacated the structure.

The department found high Ammonia levels outside the building, which had carried across Gateway Drive and into a residential neighborhood. Grand Forks Police subsequently shut down Gateway Drive, and residents in the affected area were asked to shelter in place. No levels of Ammonia were found in the buildings around the scene.

Firefighters, along with Simplot personnel, shut down the leak and ventilated the building. Once levels decreased significantly, control of the building was returned to Simplot.

No injuries were reported.
