(Fargo, ND) -- One of Fargo's City Commissioners says he is hoping to build a bridge to communities across the United States following his acceptance into a national organization.

The National League of Cities (NLC) is appointing Fargo City Commissioner John Strand to serve on the Human Development Federal Advocacy Committee. Strand will serve a one-year term, and will help provide "strategic direction and guidance for NLC’s federal advocacy agenda and policy priorities on [several] issues, "according to a release sent to WDAY Radio.

"The whole gambit of people stuff...just a spectrum of human issues that people face, "said Strand, referring to policy solutions to homelessness, drug abuse, social security, aging in-place, and several other topics, "Fargo has a good story to tell, we have an exciting level of growth and development here. We are aiming some really good places."

The NLC helps craft policy positions for politicians in local, state and federal governments, and Strand says he will represent Fargo's wants on a national level. Specifically, Strand says he wants to focus on three priorities; those being drug addition, helping shelter and provide homes for the homeless, and developing a workforce and finding jobs for those who currently don't have one. The Commissioner says he will look to bring ideas that have worked for Fargo to the national stage, and potentially bring successful ones back to the metro as well.

“NLC’s federal advocacy committees are a key tool for gathering insights directly from the communities that our members serve,” said NLC President Mayor Victoria Woodards of Tacoma, Washington in a statement to WDAY Radio. “I am excited to have Commissioner Strand serve on the Human Development committee and look forward to working with him to ensure every city, town and village in this nation has the resources they need to thrive.”
