(Clearbrook, MN) -- The Department of Natural Resources says damage to Minnesota's aquifers is more severe than previously known.

Environmental regulators said Monday that punctures by Enbridge Energy crews that ruptured three groundwater aquifers last year led to nearly 300 million gallons of groundwater flowing to the surface. DNR officials say crews were building the 340-mile Line Three replacement across northern Minnesota when the damage happened.

The company has paid more than three-million dollars in connection with the first puncture and is facing possible prosecution by the State Attorney General's Office.
