(St. Paul, MN)  --  Minnesota lawmakers are negotiating over how much of the state's surplus to spend on education.

Democrats in the House unveiled a package this week that would spend over three-billion dollars over three years. Senate Republicans are proposing about 30 million in spending. Democrats would hire thousands of mental health workers, expand pre-K, and fund state and federally mandated programs schools have struggled to budget. Republicans would prioritize literacy and the hiring of reading coaches.

Democrats say the Republican approach is inadequate, while Republicans say the Democrats' plan doesn't focus enough on results.
